The weather lately has me thinking…one of the most common questions we hear from brides and mother of the brides alike is “What do we do if it rains?” When Ben and I got married we planned our entire wedding in my grandparents pasture without a plan B for weather woes so I can totally relate to the nerves and uncertanity. However, I’m here to report that A) It is unfortunately out of everyones control but B) out of almost 150 weddings we’ve had one singular wedding where it rained so much we couldn’t shoot a portion of the day in natural light. One. How do we do this? Well I’m glad you asked 🙂 Today’s Photographer AND Bride Tip: Rocking it in the Rain Snow or Shine.
1) Be prepared and knowledgable. Photographers, have your second keep an eye on the radar throughout the day and let you know when there’s a break in the rain. It takes some flexibility on everyone’s part but our rainy day brides and grooms always take the cake and let us take them out at whatever time that may be.
2) Use available coverage for bridal parties and family portraits. Almost every venue has a least one area that’s covered enough to place the large groups under…are you going to get wet? Yeah probably…but a wet photog does not a problem make. There are plenty of coverage options for your gear to keep it safe. And if you’re second shooter is as sweet as mine they may even hold an umbrella to cover you. Thanks, Ben ;)! I’m bummed we don’t have any behind the scenes of this ha! Window light is also a perfect and safe substitute to shoot in prior to the ceremony to keep everyone dry but beautifully lit.
3) Brides, bring rain boots and umbrellas. In the case that its coming a flood there is nothing cuter than making the most of it and rocking some cute rainy day details!
4) Communication: We are in constant communication with our brides always but especially on a rainy day wedding. We always keep them posted on the timeline and changes if they have to be made and keep them 100% involved in the decision to brave the weather for outdoor portraits. Also keeping the wedding day coordinator in the loop about what time the weather will clear is essential so she or he can keep their schedule an we can also give our couple the sufficient time for gorgeous portraits.
5) Stay calm and in control. Our job as a wedding photographer is to deliver beautiful images no matter the elements. It’s also of the utmost importance to be the calm in the storm…literally. Is a rainy day ideal? Obviously no. But it’s our role and job to be a positive and calm presence through the day and do everything in our power to make the small storm the teeniest of worries because in the end…you’ve got this under control for them 🙂
So to all of you Texas brides that have to deal with crazy weather just remember we’ve got ya covered…literally and figuratively 😉 and a little rain or snow couldn’t begin to spoil such an amazing day and photographers just remember we can’t control the weather but we certainly can make the very best day ever for each of our rainy day couples! Happy, Monday!
